Landmine and Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Contamination in Asia

The size of the mine and UXO problem in South East Asia is well known. In addition to the millions of tons of ordnance expended in the Vietnam War, there were also huge amounts of ammunition expended in Laos and Cambodia. However, the Asian problem with mines and UXO extends beyond the legacy of wars in Indochina. Mines litter throughout Cambodia. They are extensive in Sri Lanka, particularly around the Jaffna peninsula. The borders of India and Pakistan, especially in the Kashmir province are heavily mined. Many border areas in Thailand are, also, heavily mined. Many Pacific islands are heavily contaminated with UXO from the 2nd World War, and of course the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea remains one of the largest mined areas in the world, today.
